Archaeological Society of New Jersey is pleased to present the State's
second Archaeology Month during May, 2004. Several events throughout
the state have been organized to celebrate our 12,000 years of heritage
and archaeology. More events are being finalized; for complete

3pm. Tour of Romance or Science?: Archaeologists at Work. New Jersey

May 8, 2004, Matt Tomaso,
Director of the Feltville Archaeology Project will lead a three hour
walking tour of the National Register of Historic Places District of
Feltville / Glenside Park, AKA The Deserted Village, in Union County's
Watchung Reservation. Several years worth of intensive research by
Tomaso, his associates and students, have lead to a reinterpretation of
the history and significance of this wonderful Colonial Period -
Present site. The tour will focus on locations where archaeological and
geographic research have yielded both historical challenges and amusing
anecdotes, and will involve some moderate hiking, depending on weather,
etc. Start time: 10 AM.
Cost: Free, but donations to the Archaeological Society of New Jersey
and the Friends of Feltville Fund will be happily accepted.
Rendezvous at: The Deserted Village Parking Lot, corner of Glenside Ave
and Cataract Hollow Road, Watchung reservation, Berkeley Heights, NJ.

Beneath Your Feet: A Walking Tour of the City's archaeology" Conducted
by Dr. Ian C. Burrow, Senior Archaeologist, Hunter Research. and Chair
of the Friends' Archaeology Committee The tour will start and end at
the museum and explore downtown Trenton and will look down at the
history beneath your feet, rather than up at the buildings around you.
Discover an underground stream, Trenton's first industrial sites, and a
lost Revolutionary cufflink! Come learn about the rich archaeological
heritage of our State capital!
Meet at the Auditorium of the NJ State
Museum, 205 West State Street, Trenton at 2pm; we will return at 4pm.
This is a free, family event, sponsored by the New Jersey State Museum.

12-4pm Archaeology Open House at the Allen House, Shrewsbury, NJ. Visit
this colonial tavern house museum, and learn about the archaeology that
has been ongoing on-site since 1998 as part of our Summer Archaeology
Camp. Demonstrations of Surface-Penetrating Radar will help us pinpoint
where we will dig this summer. Discovery stations will be set up-- try
your hand at cross-mending! This event is free; refreshments will be
available. The Allen House, a property of the Monmouth County
Historical Association, is the red house located on the corner of
Sycamre Ave. and Rte 35 in Shrewsbury (parking off Sycamore Ave). For

May 26, 2004 -- The
Monmouth County Historical Association in celebration of New Jersey
Archaeology Month 2004 presents Archaeology in Monmouth County A Free
Lecture - Monmouth County is rich in archaeological resources. These
sites have been explored and investigated for well over 100 years. MCHA
Archaeologist Megan Springate will present an overview of
archaeological research in Monmouth County, beginning with the
investigations by Charles Woolley in
the 1870s. Both prehistoric and historic sites will be discussed. A
selection of artifacts from the collections of the Monmouth County
Historical Association will be on display. Refreshments will be
available. 7:00 pm

May 26th, 2004 -- In
celebration of New Jersey Archaeology Month, the Montclair State
University Center for Archaeological Studies,
Archaeological Society of New Jersey, and Northern New Jersey Chapter
of the Archaeological Institute of America are offering a
FREE PUBLIC PRESENTATION: In Search of the Lenape: The Delaware Indians
Past and Present by Dr. David Oestreicher. 7:30PM the Dickson Building
Montclair State University Campus.
May 27th, 2004 -
"Archaeology in New Brunswick" you are cordially invited to attend a
presentation about the 2002 Archaeological Excavation on the site that
is now the Riverside Urban Renewal housing in New Brunswick. Thursday
May 27th, 2004 at 7:30pm. Location: Community Room of the New Brunswick
Free Public Library. Presented by Judson Kratzer, Senior Archaeologist,
Cultural Resource Consulting Group. Hosted by The New Brunswick
Historical Society. The focus of the presentation will be on the
history and operation of a 19th century pottery factory located on
Burnet Street - now Route 18 and the site of the Riverside housing
development - that was in operation from about 1850 to 1901. The
program is free and open to the public.
Saturday, May 29th -- Open
house at Merchants and Drovers Tavern in Rahway from 11:00-4:00. We
will have artifacts on display from past excavations and will be
starting to excavate a 19th-century store's foundation. Located at the
